Relational Fields: Embodied Improvisation and the Act of Witnessing
Adel Andalibi’s work weaves improvisation, contemplative movement, and traditional embodied practices into a single field of inquiry, where motion becomes a form of listening and attention becomes an active art. Rooted in decades of experience with Contact Improvisation, somatic disciplines, and classical movement lineages, his practice treats improvisation not as spontaneity alone but as a contemplative state — a way of tuning perception, sensing relational space, and allowing form to emerge from deep internal quietness. For performance contexts, Adel brings this convergence of tradition and inquiry to the stage as a living process: movement as contemplation, contemplation as choreography, and the body as the site where cultural memory, presence, and creative unfolding meet. As an anthropologist of contemplative traditions Adel has been in a two year retreat in Taoist mountains if Sichuan, and been based in east Himalayas in recent years. Adel is offering somatic movement education and group contemplative experiences internationally.
In this movement & improvisation workshop, we are not aiming to cultivate spontaneity — we take that capacity in the participants for granted. Instead, we focus on facilitating an experience of arriving at a quiet space: an inner and relational field where mental noise softens enough for us to listen to the musicality of each moment. Our improvisational repertoires will be simple — everyday actions such as walking, sitting, lying down, breathing together, speaking words, making sounds, making contact, and touch. The workshop includes gentle touch, breath work, and moments of vocal expression, always within clear consent. From this simplicity, our collective body and collective mind may unfold in their own patterns, revealing the invisible dimensions of our shared experience — the parts we usually cannot access. And bringing this hidden layer of our collective life into visibility is, I believe, a provocative performance in itself.
